The Flats (Atlanta, Ga)- Brent Key and company kept the ball rolling on the 2025 recruiting class today with the 6th commitment of consensus 3 star ATH, JP Powell. Powell, who hails from Miller County Highschool, by way of Colquitt, Georgia, will presumably start his career as a running back for Norval Mackenzie. Adding to a relatively young, but deep and talented running back room, proves that Powell will not shy away from competition. Powell, a two sport athlete (baseball and football), is currently ranked as the 28th best athlete in the country and the 40th ranked overall player in the Peach State’s 2025 class, with his senior season just around the corner. While his junior stats show only 58 carries and 394 yards, Powell contributed 5 touchdowns for the Miller County Pirates. The region 1, 100 meter track and field champion brings a lot of speed to the Jackets running back room and will have Tech fans intrigued to follow his senior season; one that is poised for a breakout.
Recently, Afterswarm reporter and editor, Montaega Harrison was able to have a brief conversation with Powell, who just came off his official visit.
Q: How did you visit to Georgia Tech go?
A: I really enjoyed my visit to Tech. I enjoyed sitting in on the offensive meetings, learning how they will use me in the offense.
Q: Who hosted you on your visit and what did he tell you about GT?
A: Daylon Gordon was my host and he was just talking about how much he loves Georgia Tech and the coaches truly care about you, both on and off the field.
Q: Where does Tech sit on your top list of schools? Do you have a commitment timeline?
A: Georgia Tech and Mississippi State are my top two schools right now and I plan to make a decision within a few weeks.
Q:What factors go into choosing a school?
A: The relationship I have with the coaching staff, the strength and conditioning program and how my school will help me with life, after my playing days are over.
Q: That’s a great answer. When you sat down with Coach Key, what was his message to you?
A: My conversations with Coach Key centered around the direction of the program, the continued development of the players and adding more guys who fit the with the current roster.
Q: What do you feel you will add to the program, as well as your strengths as a player?
A: My speed is one thing the coaches really like about me and the fact I bring good breakaway speed to the room. My strengths are also my training schedule and support system. I train at 5:30 AM and that’s something Coach Miller has helped me develop. He’s getting me acclimated to training early, so when I get to college it wont be a huge adjustment. Being a two sport athlete, training early in the mornings and doing my speed training in the afternoons with Coach Travis Norton, has really helped me implement time management, where it’s important to also use my spare time to study.
Q: Sounds like your coaches are doing a great job, getting you prepared for the next level. How would you describe your relationship with Coach McKenzie? GT was your first offer, correct?Â
A: Our relationship is great, we talk daily. He’s been real with me since day 1. No, GT wasn’t my first offer, but it was one of my first few. My first Power 4 offer was Tech, though.
Q: Last question, I assume you brought some family along on the visit? How did they like Tech and what did they think about your visit?
A: My mom has been with me on all my visits to Tech, so she was already familiar with them. She really likes the family atmosphere. My coach/mentor Travis Norton also came with us on the visit. He’s been involved in the entire process, but this was his first time visiting GT and meeting all the staff. Everything went really well this weekend.
Clearly, the visit went better than Powell led us to believe, given his hard commit just a few days off his visit, with an official to Mississippi State still in the coming weeks. Powell will be an exciting recruiting story to follow and you’ll get it all on AfterSwarm, as new information comes down the pipeline. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to watch this 2025 class unfold.
