Portal activity has really taken off for the Jackets. Focusing much of their attention on G5/FCS portal targets looking to make the jump to P4 schools, has obviously been the gameplan for Brent Key and his staff. There are 3 visitors on campus today that the staff would love to lock down and get commitments from to join the 2025 team. Lets take a look at who they are.
CJ Heard S, FAU- CJ might be a familiar name for Yellow Jacket fans that stick close to recruiting. A former 4 star recruit from Woodward Academy who was at one commited to FSU found hisself falling down the boards. Teams across the country looked at him as a tweener between S and LB. They didnt really see a ton of growth between his Sophmore year and Senior year in high school which lead to himmbeing dropped by FSU. He couldnt really find a home at P4 school after taking multiple visits after his decommitment at FSU which landed him at FAU. He bet on himself balled out and had a solid season for the owls. He led the team in tackling with 80 (53 solo and 27 assisted), a forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries. He is a hard hitting safety that the Jackets could really use on the back end of the defense. Out of the visitiors I would rank him at #1a as far as priority goes.
Rushawn Lawrence DL, Stony Brook- Rushawn Lawrence could be a really intriguing prospect for the Jackets. a 6’2 270 EDGE that can get after the QB. He finished the 2024 season with 37 total tackles (15 solo and 22 assisted), 6 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 INT. The Yellow Jackets saw the DL take a massive leap forward. Rushing defense was phenomenal landing the Jackets with the 5th best rushing defense in the ACC. Pass rush is where the Jackets could really use some help. Having a nice edge on the other side of Senior, Romello Height could help the DL take another step forward. With the importance placed on the trenches by Brent Key and the desperate need for rush help on the edge i would rank Rashawn as priority #1b
Malachi Hosley RB, Penn- Malachi has blown up in recent days since entering the portal. He is a 5’10” 195 pound back from Columbus. He rushed for almost 1200 yards on 191 carries and 9 TDs. The Jackets have found success with Jamal Haynes and Chad Alexander but have been searching for a power back to compliment them. Trelain Maddox and Anthony Carrie have potential, but Trelain has had some injuries keeping him out, and Anthony has had some ball security issues preventing him from seeing some serious time on the field. Recruits Shane Marshall and JP Powell have a chance to see some reps at that power back slot, but the Jackets need someone with experience now. Several teams have jumped on the bandwagon, but with the proximity to home and the prospect of having his family being able to watch him play on a regular basis i would be confident in saying Georgia Tech has a leg up in his recruitment.
The portal gives and the portal takes away. Time will only tell how these recruitments play out, but i like where we stand with them. NIL will be a factor for each player but i dont think anyone commands an amount GT wouldnt be willing to pay. Stay tuned as we follow along!
